Coeliac UK, the national charity for people with coeliac disease, will be hosting its annual conference and food fair on Saturday 2nd July at Bath Racecourse.

The event hopes to attract around a thousand people who will hear from experts in the field of coeliac disease and visit one of the UK’s largest gluten-free food fairs, with 40 gluten-free manufacturers exhibiting their products.

Experts from the charity will be on hand to discuss symptoms and provide advice on how to get diagnosed. Help and advice on living gluten-free will also be available, as well as one-to-one dietetic clinics.

There will also be the chance for people in the region to visit the ‘is it coeliac disease’ pop up stand and enjoy a range of talks from Coeliac UK and guest speaker and leading gastroenterologist Professor David Sanders.

The event is open to all, although only Members of Coeliac UK will be able to vote in the AGM. Admission is free, however the Charity welcomes donations.

Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system damages the lining of the small bowel when gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, is eaten.

There is no cure and no medication; the only treatment is a strict gluten-free diet for life. Left untreated, coeliac disease can lead to a number of complications including osteoporosis and, in rare cases, even small bowel cancer.

Key symptoms caused by coeliac disease include: frequent bouts of diarrhoea, stomach pain and cramping, regular mouth ulcers, ongoing fatigue, lots of gas and bloating, nausea and vomiting, and unexplained anaemia.

Running throughout the day will be a gluten-free food fair with 40 manufacturers – local and national – exhibiting their latest gluten-free food and offering tastings, discounts and free samples.
