Local residents across the Bath area are being encouraged to book their GP appointments and order their repeat prescriptions online, following the launch of a new system.
All GPs in Bath are now able to provide this service, called Patient Online, making it much more convenient for many patients.
The service is accessible from any location via a computer, smartphone or tablet. Patients can also still call or visit their surgery if they wish.
NHS England’s south region has launched a campaign to promote Patient Online, targeting busy commuters who might struggle to find the time to book GP appointments, and carers who often have to make appointments and order repeat prescriptions for relatives, as well as themselves.
Adverts will be appearing on buses and trains and there will be stands in local shopping centres giving people information about the service.
Since Patient Online has been introduced, GPs have reported a ‘freeing up’ of phone lines as more patients make use of these online services.
This in-turn has given staff more time to deal with other critical issues and queries.
NHS England South is particularly keen to encourage patients to make use of the service to order repeat prescriptions prior to the Christmas and New Year holiday when many pharmacies will be closed.
Residents can start using the service once they have registered with their GP practice.
Dr Geoff Payne, Medical Director at NHS England South Central said: ‘‘Booking GP appointments and ordering repeat prescriptions has never been easier.
“Patients can now access these services anytime and anywhere, without having to call or visit their surgery.
“Registration is also straightforward. Patients just need to visit their GP practice with a proof of ID and they’ll be set up for online access. It’s as simple as that.
“The feedback from Patient Online users has been positive as they really appreciate the convenience of the service. It’s easy to use and also secure, which is what people need from a service like this.”
