One of the UK’s leading manufacturers of ventilation systems, EnviroVent, is offering free Radon testing for homeowners who live in Bath, one of the areas in the UK that is most at risk.
Radon is a radioactive gas with no smell, taste or colour, but which can cause serious health problems for people living in areas with higher than acceptable Radon levels.
An increased exposure to Radon levels is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in the UK and it is estimated that more than 1,100 deaths from lung cancer each year in Britain are caused by Radon.
Phil Harrison, EnviroVent Domestic Ventilation Manager, said: “We are advising homeowners if they are concerned about Radon levels in their home to get in touch and we can arrange a free Radon test.
“Our Positive Input Ventilation systems have proved to be very effective in reducing Radon gas levels and therefore minimising the risks to occupants.
“These systems also have a very positive benefit by improving indoor air quality in the home, which helps to create a healthier living environment.”
Radon is measured in units called Becquerel’s and generally a level below 100 Bq/m³ is considered to be low risk but if radon levels rise above this, the risk can increase significantly.
Testing involves placing a Radon test kit in the home for at least seven days to ensure an accurate reading is obtained. If levels are found to be high, an Envirovent ventilation unit can help to improve air quality and reduce Radon to acceptable levels.
Radon can be present in buildings of any size, age, type or location. It is mainly found in areas with high levels of granite and other igneous rock.
