Funding has been secured thanks to a number of sponsors to ensure that the Christmas lights stay on throughout Weston village’s High Street this year.
Back in September local Councillor Colin Barrett launched a ‘Save our Christmas Lights’ campaign which sought sponsors willing to put up enough funds help to keep the Christmas lights on throughout the village’s High Street.
The fundraising drive was launched after money originally raised to install the lights back in 2011 ran out this year.
Now, thanks to donations from Bath Racecourse, a number of independent traders in the area and a local resident, enough money has been raised to keep the lights on again this Christmas.
The money raised will mean the Christmas decorations which have lit up the Post Office end of the village’s High Street for the past three years will be back on again this season.
In addition, Councillor Barrett has secured agreement from the Council that next year the Christmas lights at Post Office end of the village will be included in the tender alongside the lights at the opposite end of the High Street.
Councillor Barrett (Cons, Weston) said: “I’m really pleased that, with the help of fellow local resident Matthew Davies, we’ve been able to secure the funds needed to keep the Christmas lights on throughout the High Street this year.
“I’d like to thank all those who donated money to this campaign, and in particular Bath Racecourse, who provided a substantial amount of the funding needed.
“The generosity of these donors will mean the Christmas spirit will remain throughout the High Street this year.
“On top of this, in order to secure the future of the lights for the longer-term, I’ve managed to get agreement from the Council that these lights will be included in the wider Christmas lights tender for the village next year.”
