Avon Fire and Rescue firefighters dealt with a fire on board a canal barge in the centre of Bathampton on Thursday afternoon.
When crews arrived they found the male occupant, thought to be in his 50s, outside having attempted to deal with the fire himself.
He was unharmed.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire.
A thermal imaging camera was used to check for hotspots once the fire was out.
It’s thought the fire started accidentally after cooking on a grill caught light and spread to the wooden structure behind, causing a small amount of damage.
As the boat was moored close to a nearby pub, firefighters were able to access it quickly and extinguish the fire before it had a chance to take hold.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service are taking the opportunity to remind people to take care when cooking.
Keep grills clean so that a build-up of fat doesn’t catch fire and never leave cooking unattended. For more fire safety advice click here.
