While many of us will now happily sit at home and watch a film on-demand or maybe sit in front of the television, Bath’s theatre venues are continuing to bring fantastic productions to the city.
With the majority of us now choosing to stream a film, or use our smartphones and tablets to access the ever expanding digital libraries of mobile content, the popular productions in Bath’s local theatres and venues are still giving residents a great evening out.
Whether you’re sat in bed or in your living room, there’s always the opportunity to watch what you’d like when you’d like – using well known brands or other providers such as http://www.pictureboxfilms.com, you’ll find a conveniently rotating selection of films in a variety of genres, always updating to bring you fresh content, and available online or through apps on your array of different devices. This is just one example of the dozens of streaming services making things easier for fans of cinema and television.
But for many of us, there’s still a lot of value to be found in the experience of going out to a unique cinema/venue. There’s just something inexplicably pleasant about making an evening out of a film event – going out with friends or family to a comfortable, pleasant venue to watch a brand new film, and perhaps going out for drinks or dinner afterward. No matter how convenient streaming services become, there’s just no replacing a classic cinema experience. So with that in mind, here’s a look at three of the best “old school” venues in and around Bath.
The Little Theatre Cinema
If you appreciate a good mix of an older architecture, family-run feel and a high-tech viewing facility, this is the place for you. The Little Theatre is actually run by Picturehouse, a major name in public art and entertainment, but it still feels like a a community business, with a friendly atmosphere and an aesthetically beautiful facade.
Inside the theatre, sound and picture quality have been updated without tarnishing the semi-vintage feel of the venue, and in recent years food and drink offerings have improved significantly, with fair trade products in the fold and alcoholic beverages now available. Additionally, with Picturehouse in control, the theatre now sees all the hottest new releases. It’s really a gorgeous and entertaining venue.
Komedia
Opened in 2008 at the Beau Nash Cinema in Bath, Komedia actually comes from Brighton, and now represents the best in live entertainment in Bath. At Komedia, you’ll see a dazzling variety of live shows, from established comedy acts and budding musical stars to brand new music performers and theatre acts. The Komedia venue also caters to the viewer experience, allowing a retro approach by which spectators eat meals and sip drinks during shows. It’s a great place to have a good time, and another reminder of the value of in-person entertainment. Check out the venue at http://www.komedia.co.uk/bath/.
The Theatre Royal, Bath
If you’re looking for the elegance and tradition of a true theatre for stage performances, there’s no place better than here. One of the oldest theatres in Britain, this is home to a variety of the very best in theatre entertainment, with three specific venues included: “Main House,” “The Egg” (for younger audiences), and “Ustinov Studio.”
Their Christmas pantomime brings in thousands of residents and locals each year. This year they are staging Peter Pan, which will be including a number of favourite familiar faces to please the audience.
