The Student Community Partnership (SCP) has announced additional rubbish collections to assist Bath’s university students moving out of the city for the summer.

The SCP, a joint venture between the University of Bath and Bath Spa University and their respective Students’ Unions, and Bath & North East Somerset Council, is working with the Council’s Waste Services Team to put on twice-weekly rubbish and recycling collections, starting on Friday 8th June until the end of the month.

The University of Bath and Bath Spa University have both supported this new initiative, which is hoped will significantly reduce the amount of waste waiting to be collected at this especially busy time of year.

Students are advised to place their wheelie bins and/or reusable rubbish sacks in a visible place at the front of their property with any additional rubbish sacks placed neatly beside them for collection.

Chair of the SCP and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching) at the University of Bath, Professor Peter Lambert, commented: “We recognise this is a very busy time as students move out for the summer period, with an increase in the amount of waste needing to be collected and recycled.

“No-one wants to see large amounts of rubbish bags and recycling waiting to be collected so we are delighted that both universities have supported this new initiative which I am sure will be helpful for students and their neighbours.”

The streets which will receive extra collections will be:

  • Arlington Road, Ayr Street
  • Beckhampton Road, Belvedere, Belvoir Road, Brook Road, Brougham Hayes, Burlington Street
  • Caledonian Road, Calton Walk, Canterbury Road, Crandale Road, Crescent Gardens, Cynthia Road
  • Dartmouth Avenue, Denmark Road, Dorset Close, Dorset Street
  • Faulkland Road
  • Herbert Road, Highland Terrace, Holloway
  • King Edward Road, King Georges Road
  • Landseer Road, Lime Grove, Livingstone Road, Lorne Road, Lyndhurst Road
  • Maybrick Road, Mayfield Mews, Mayfield Road, Melcombe Road, Millmead Road, Moorland Road
  • Park Street
  • Ringwood Road
  • Second Avenue, Shaftesbury Mews, Shaftesbury Road, South Avenue, South View Road, St Kilda’s Road, Stanley Road West, Stuart Place, Sydenham Buildings
  • The Triangle, Third Avenue, Triangle East, Triangle North, Triangle West
  • Vernon Park, Victoria Road, Victoria Terrace
  • Wells Road, West Avenue

Students seeking more information or advice during the move-out period are encouraged to contact the SCP by emailing [email protected] or visiting: http://scpbath.org.uk/.

A great initiative but for a sector of the community that doesn’t pay any council tax, who’s footing the bill for this? BANES reported that year end to 2016 they lost approx £4m in council tax on student properties. How many more student units have been built since then? What will this year end tax loss be? To be clear, I’m not blaming the students. The HMO and student landlords make plenty off student backs so they should pay the council tax for all their units. There are cutbacks everywhere and we’re all suffering because of it: health, policing, education. Something needs to be done!
