A person was killed in a collision on the M4 motorway near Bath this afternoon, Tuesday 26th March, Avon & Somerset Police has confirmed.
Officers say they were called at around 1pm to reports of a collision between a lorry and a car between Junction 18 (Bath) and Junction 19 (M32).
Despite the best efforts of emergency services, one person died at the scene.
The victim’s family are being offered support by a specialist family liaison officer.
Four people were taken to hospital with injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.
Two air ambulances attended the scene, with the Wiltshire Air Ambulance then travelling to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.
A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 13.02hrs to a road traffic incident near Yate.
“We sent five double-crewed land ambulances, two operations officers, two critical care cars, two air ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and a hazardous area response team.”
The motorway was closed in both directions to allow emergency services to work at the scene. Both carriageways reopened at around 7pm.
The public has been thanked for their patience and understanding while the police carried out investigative work.
