A 27-year-old man caught driving in St Saviour’s Road in Bath whilst disqualified has been fined £200 and banned from the road again.

Joao Carneiro Murta, of Wade Street in St Pauls in Bristol, appeared before Bath magistrates on Wednesday 18th February to admit, via a Portuguese interpreter, that he had driven the Vauxhall Corsa on 8th January while disqualified under the totting up system.

Totting up is the accumulation of 12 or more penalty points for driving offences committed within a three-year period.

Magistrates banned Murta for a total of four months – three for the offence and the month that the previous ban still has to run.

He was ordered to pay a surcharge of £80 and £85 prosecution costs.

There was no separate penalty for driving without insurance, which Murta also admitted, but his licence was endorsed.
