Michael McGowan, 32, of no fixed abode, was charged with burgling the bookshop in Bladud Buildings and stealing a purse.

He was also charged with fraud by false representation, after a bank card from the stolen purse was used in a nearby shop the same night.

Bookshop staff called the police after finding a man in a staff-only area at around 10.45pm on Tuesday 9th October.

Neighbourhood PC Adge Secker and response officer PC James Lawes were patrolling the city at the time and attended the scene.

After making local enquiries, the pair arrested the man at 11.30pm.
