Traffic across Bath came to a standstill this morning after a crane leaked oil across Cleveland Bridge, leaving roads needing to be closed and tailbacks along the A4 London Road.

Bathwick Street and Cleveland Place were closed by Avon and Somerset Police as the fire brigade and Council highway teams worked to clean up the 450 litres of oil across the road.

The inbound section of the road was closed while the cleanup took place.

Police closed the junction of Cleveland Place for inbound traffic, leaving motorists having no option but to head up Margaret’s Hill towards the Paragon.

Traffic steadily built up heading outbound of Bath as well as police began diverting traffic.

The A46 bypass and Batheaston were most affected with delays of around 20 minutes being added to journeys.

King Lifting, the company whose crane leaked, sent a rescue team to recover the crane at just before 10.30am.

Did the bus gate get opened to all traffic so that inbound traffic heading west or south could get through?
