A team of volunteers recently spent the day gardening at a care centre for the deaf and hard of hearing in Bath, organised by staff from The Consortium in Trowbridge.
Poolemead House in Bath provides support and care services to people with hearing impairment, as well as dementia, blindness and autism, and is run by the charity Action on Hearing Loss.
The voluntary day was organised by staff from The Consortium, an education and care supplies Company in Trowbridge, as it is a charity close to one employee’s heart.
The team set to work on the centre’s extensive grounds, which require a lot of upkeep and maintenance.
Despite it being a very busy time of year for the team they were keen to make the most of the Company’s Volunteer Time policy, which allows employees to get involved in local projects.
Volunteer Tim Furniss, whose brother is profoundly deaf, has close ties with the wider deaf community and was delighted he and his colleagues could help.
“We thought it important to use this opportunity,” explained Tim. “Not only were we able to build on our great team spirit, most importantly we helped this fantastic charity.”
Funding at Poolemead is very tight, which sometimes makes it difficult to maintain the gardens – a shame for the residents who love the outdoor space.
“We had a fantastic day,” continued Tim. “It was very hard work but we would recommend doing something like this to everyone. We can’t wait to give it another go soon.”
Action on Hearing Loss is the largest UK charity helping people confronting deafness, tinnitus and hearing loss to live the life they choose.
