Councillors in the village of Peasedown St John near Bath have welcomed the introduction of new safety signage on the A367 between Radstock and Dunkerton.

Independent councillors Sarah Bevan and Karen Walker have been campaigning for more road safety measures to be implemented along the busy stretch of road.

Collision Route signage has recently been erected by Bath & North East Somerset Council along the route, highlighting the number of casualties over the last decade.

Cllr Sarah Bevan said: “There have been 120 casualties along this road over the last 10 years. It’s horrific.

“Cllr Walker and I have long campaigned and lobbied for measures to be put in place that reduce driver speed and make it safer for both drivers and pedestrians.

“Hopefully, these new signs will encourage motorists to slow down and take extra care when driving around the A367 Peasedown by-pass.”

Over the years, the Peasedown councillors have secured other safety measures, including:

  • Arranging for trees to be cut back at the bottom of Dunkerton Hill to aid driver visibility.
  • Having more visible road markings painted on the A367.
  • The re-prioritisation of lanes near the Odd Down park & ride.
  • Having the drains cleared out on the Peasedown by-pass to alleviate flooding.
  • Arranging for ‘No HGV’ signs to be erected at the top of Braysdown Lane, en-route to Shoscombe.
  • The installation of four pedestrian refuges mid-carriageway along the Peasedown bypass section of the A367 so walkers can cross the road more easily.
  • Having a light-controlled pedestrian crossing installed near the Business Park to enable pedestrians to cross safely over the bypass.

Cllr Karen Walker added: “We’re grateful to the staff at the council for erecting these new signs, and for always being willing to consider new ideas that Cllr Bevan and I put forward to enhance road safety in this area.

“If any residents would like to discuss road safety issues with us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”
