Those who live or work in Bath are being given the opportunity to suggest places where more bike hangars should be installed to provide on-street cycle parking as part of a pilot scheme.
In December last year, Bath & North East Somerset Council installed four hangars in three residential areas as part of the first phase of a two-year trial.
The local authority has now launched a bike hangar installation consultation, asking residents and visitors to propose locations for more lockable, secure hangars which can store six bikes each.
Feedback from the consultation will be used to select up to 20 priority locations and inform whether there is demand for future phases of the cycle hangars project.
The hangars will be installed, maintained and operated by Falco and each bike parking space costs £42 a year to rent during the trial period.
The consultation runs until 13th March.
Councillor Manda Rigby, cabinet member for Transport, said: “These bike hangars are ideal for people who don’t have access to private cycle parking at home or at work.
“The trial that is already under way in three streets in Bath has been a success with uptake of spaces reaching 90% capacity within four weeks, which demonstrates the need for this provision in our towns and cities.
“Now we want to hear from you about where you think more hangars should be located so that they are similarly well-used.
“Being able to leave the car at home and cycle for short journeys can be a convenient choice for many people, but not having somewhere safe to leave a bike can be a barrier to this.
“We hope by rolling out more cycle hangars, we can enable more people to own and use bikes and help reduce traffic congestion – and improve air quality along the way.”
The cycle hangars already being trialled in Great Stanhope Street, New King Street and Sydney Buildings can be rented from Falco at www.rentals.falco.co.uk.
