Judging has taken place in the latest round of Bath Riverside’s stone carving competition, with designs chosen to make a permanent contribution to the new residential quarter.
The first competition in 2012 saw an array of stone carvings created, based on the theme of ‘Elements’.
Out of the 24 entries from the first competition, 14 pieces were permanently incorporated into the streets and buildings around Crest Nicholson Regeneration’s development.
Over the past 18 months budding artists, designers and, stone carvers have been busy once again creating designs out of Bath stone supplied by Bath Stone Group. The project has also been supported by the Bath College Construction Skills Centre.
The competition was judged by the Crest Nicholson arts panel with the winning designs including carvings of Victoria Bridge, Pulteney Bridge and a Roman chariot.
Local artist Peter Dickinson, who is responsible for the Bath Riverside Arts Strategy, said: “The contributions we’ve had from the local community for all of the arts projects throughout Bath Riverside have been fantastic.
“This latest competition has allowed stone carvers another chance to have their designs incorporated into the street scene.
“The entries have been of an exceptionally high standard and six winners have been chosen to be on permanent display at Bath Riverside for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
Neil Dawtrey, Senior Projects Director at Crest Nicholson, said, “The ongoing art strategy at Bath Riverside has involved an array of artists from across the city.
“Over the past six years, contributions from Bathonians have included bronze sculptures, stone carvings, window etching designs and more.
“As always we are delighted with the response from local people and we look forward to incorporating the winning designs into the development in the near future.”
