Avon Fire & Rescue Service will hold its “Be Water Aware” event at Brunel Square in Bath on Saturday 25th April, from 11am to 3pm.

The event is intended to raise awareness of the risks linked to open water and will include throw line demonstrations as well as interactive opportunities for people to learn water safety skills from firefighters.

The service says the event will also highlight the dangers of entering the water after drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Research by the Royal Life Saving Society, based on WAID data from 2018 to 2023, found that 46% of accidental drownings among people aged 18 to 25 involved alcohol and or drugs.

Firefighters say they regularly attend incidents where personal belongings such as phones and clothing are left behind, and the event will be used to show the serious consequences that can follow.

Those attending will be reminded of key safety advice, including the “Float to Live” message, which advises anyone who falls into water to lie on their back, move their arms and legs gently, calm their breathing and shout for help.

People will also be told to call 999 if they see a person or animal struggling in the water and never enter the water themselves to attempt a rescue.

The event will also highlight the role of river rescue cabinets positioned at regular intervals along Bath’s river path, which contain lifesaving equipment and instructions on how to use it.

Jacq Hardwick, water safety lead for Avon Fire & Rescue Service, said: “With the River Avon running through the heart of Bath, it is vital to raise awareness of the risks associated with open water, particularly as warmer weather approaches. This event is designed to equip the public with knowledge of how to keep themselves and others safe in and around our waterways, along with the confidence of knowing how to respond should something go wrong”.

The service said 1,602 people in the UK lost their lives through accidental drowning between 2019 and 2024, with 901 of those deaths happening in inland waters such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Half of those who drowned had not intended to enter the water.

The Bath event forms part of the National Fire Chiefs Council’s annual Be Water Aware campaign, which runs from 27th April to 3rd May.
