Whether it’s a big tree in your home with lots of lights or just a few decorations, locals are being reminded that the season can bring many hazards.

Small things such as testing your smoke alarm, checking your recipe and taking metal cases off mince pies can all prove to be important in preventing accidents.

Weston-super-Mare’s Station Manager Anna James said: “We’re here every single day of the year to help keep you safe, but there are simple steps you can take to help reduce your risk and make Christmas safer for everyone.”

How can you stay safe at home?

  • Decorate to your heart’s content – but don’t decorate your smoke alarm. Leave it uncovered, and check it works before you start cooking. AF&RS recommend testing your alarm once per week.
  • Whether you’re a nutrition novice or an eggnog expert, don’t leave your feast to chance. Make sure you know what you’re doing. Find a recipe, ask for help or use the internet to check your method.
  • Give your dinner your full attention, even whilst you’re cooking it. Keep distractions to a minimum, and ask for help if you need it.
  • Leave sparkling to your decorations and keep metal out of the microwave.

Nikki Rice, Prevention Manager at Avon Fire & Rescue, said: “This video is a great example of our crews coming together to share vital safety messaging.

“We all need to play our part in preventing accidents, and work together to make this a very Merry Christmas.”
