Devonshire Tunnel reopens then closes again after heavy rainfall

One of Bath’s flooded Two Tunnels, which had been closed since early January, reopened on Friday 16th February but more heavy rainfall saw it close again on Wednesday 21st February.

The shared-use Two Tunnels Greenway connects Bath and the Midford Valley and is managed by the charity Sustrans.

The shorter of the tunnels, the Devonshire, had been closed since 4th January and flooding was first noted before Christmas.

On 16th February Sustrans posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that after clearing significant winter flooding, the Devonshire Tunnel was open for use again.

“While we await repairs of a nearby drain, we’ll continue to monitor water levels. Please take care as some water remains. Thanks for your patience.”

Sustrans then announced on Wednesday: “Due to rising water levels, Devonshire Tunnel is closing from this afternoon. Recent rainfall has overwhelmed the drainage again.

“We’ll be regularly inspecting the water levels to determine when it’s safe to reopen.

“Water will be pumped to enable Saturday’s Relish Running Races to go ahead in the interim.”
