The A36 out of Bath towards Warminster, one of the main routes in and out of the city, has been closed due to a significant hay bale fire, which fire crews are currently tackling.

The fire started in the early hours of this morning, with crews from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service responding to the blaze near Hinton Charterhouse.

The A36 has been closed from the junction of the A4 London Road and the A366 Farleigh Road  in Farleigh Hungerford.

Avon and Somerset Police say they expect the fire to burn for a number of days, due to the amount of hay involved.

The road is expected to be closed until at least midday while the fire is dampened down.

Yesterday, Avon Fire & Rescue Service said they and the police are currently investigating a series of fires at farm buildings in South Gloucestershire.

During the early hours of yesterday, Tuesday 11th November, firefighters were called to fires at three separate farms in the Chipping Sodbury area.

All three are thought to have been started deliberately.

Update: The Highways Agency reopened the A36 at around 10.40 this morning.
