After five years of lobbying and discussions, councillors have secured £18,000 to install a pedestrian crossing-island and waiting spaces in Orchard Way, Peasedown St John.
Installed last week, the island is located mid way between the junctions of Russet Way and Underleaf Way.
Cllr Sarah Bevan, who had lobbied the council for years with former councillor Nathan Hartley and new councillor Karen Walker, said: “We are grateful to all the residents who have asked us for this to be installed over the years.
“It’s taken a while, but the £18,000 has now finally been put to good use to ensure crossing this part of the road is much safer.
“Large parts of Peasedown St John are used as regular walk routes to and from the local shops, and to our surrounding countryside for daytime and weekend walks.”
The investment is in addition to a further £70,000 that is coming to the village this year – secured by former councillor Nathan Hartley as part of last February’s budget discussions.
B&NES Independent councillor Karen Walker, added: “We’re going to see a lot of funding spent on road infrastructure and safety projects this year.
“Sarah and I have started working with council staff on initiatives to see two permanent flashing Slow Down signs installed in Ashgrove and Eckweek Road, and feasibility studies into having a zebra crossing in Braysdown Lane, and more traffic calming measures in Orchard Way.
“We’re also arranging for all the pavements in Bath Road and Ashgrove to be re-surfaced.”
The councillors will be keeping residents updated on all projects through regular newsletters and e-bulletins.

Saturday 20th June, 2015 at 14:12This is a good thing but £18k for 2 no. dropped curbs and an island, really?! In these times of austerity cuts, thousands of pounds could of been saved and still install an island. Need someone who is in the real world and knows what things should cost.
