Don Foster, Bath’s MP, has welcomed the announcement that the Lib Dem manifesto will contain a pledge of extra money for people who care full time for elderly or disabled relations.

The Carer’s Bonus, announced by the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, will give an annual bonus of £125 to those who have been entitled to Carer’s Allowance for at least one year.

This bonus will rise every year to £250 by the end of the next Parliament.

In Bath and North East Somerset, 1710 carers will be eligible for this no strings attached bonus.

Commenting on this announcement, Don Foster MP, said: “This is great news for the many carers in Bath and The Carer’s Bonus is a recognition of the contribution they make on a daily basis.

“Furthermore, the announcement is another excellent example of the work the Liberal Democrats are doing, and will continue to do so if returned to power next year, to deliver a fairer society.”

Almost half of all carers are cutting back on essentials like food and heating.

Around 6 in 10 people will become a carer at some point in their lives.

This saves the state around £119 billion but puts a significant financial hardship on the carer.
