Funding for environmental improvements to the London Road was ‘unlocked’ this week as B&NES’ Liberal Democrat Cabinet approved a report on the London Road Regeneration “project framework and governance structure”.
Councillor Cherry Beath (Liberal Democrat, Combe Down), who moved the report, commented: “This is an exciting time for the residents of London Road. We are releasing the money which was approved by Council in February so we can get projects hitting the ground as soon as possible. I’m really glad we have been able to get on with this so quickly. We have achieved a lot in a short time and this regeneration will help reverse years of neglect of this area by the previous administration.”
Councillor Beath also praised the involvement of the ‘Gateway Group’, which she said had been scrupulously constituted. The Group includes ward Councillors and 12 members representing a cross section of the local community including residents and business owners.
Councillor Lisa Brett (Liberal Democrat, Walcot), spoke in favour of the report at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, and said: “The London Road desperately needs this regeneration project. I hope that the improvements to the street scene and buildings lining London Road will help attract inward investment to the area, bringing new jobs and opportunities to our residents. The project will also enhance the Eastern gateway to the city, helping to improve Bath’s reputation.”
Councillor Paul Fox (Liberal Democrat, Walcot), added: “The state of London Road has been an embarrassment to the city for far too long. This investment will help create a neighbourhood where people will be proud to live. I am delighted that the Liberal Democrat administration has directly responded to the priorities of London Road residents.”
