A successful trial by the Council of reusable gull and animal proof rubbish bags is being extended to cover a further 850 homes as part of a second phase.
In an attempt to help keep the streets of Bath cleaner, last September 2012, the Council trialled new reusable rubbish bags with 1,000 homes in twenty-two streets in central Bath.
The aim was to reduce the mess caused by birds and animals when they scavenge for food in normal rubbish sacks, and to identify any issues the bags themselves cause for residents. The reusable bags proved very popular– 86% of those residents wanted to continue to use the bags at the end of the trial.
Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Twerton), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said, “The reusable bags proved very popular with local people and certainly made a difference toward reducing the amount of litter created by animals.
“Bath & North East Somerset Council wants to build upon this success by encouraging an even greater number of homes to use the bag. We’ve listened to feedback homes taking part in phase one. For example, the new batches of bags are slightly smaller and weighted.”
From Monday 1st April 2013 crews will deliver a reusable bag and letter with guidelines for use, to each property.
A full list of the streets in Bath that will be receiving a bag is available on the Council website. People can also email [email protected] or call 01225 39 40 41.
The Council Waste Team will also be door knocking to promote awareness from April 15 and detailing their progress on the ‘Recycle for Bathnes’ Facebook page where people can still claim their free food waste caddy liners by Liking the page.
