The public consultation on the amended plans for the redevelopment of Bath Quays South has opened, after they were comprehensively reviewed following comments received from heritage stakeholders.
The alterations address issues raised by stakeholders while ensuring the development still delivers the office needs of Bath’s vitally important business community.
The changes include:
- The lowering of the office building by a full storey, reducing the height by 4.3m from the original planning submission. The new scheme will still achieve the required office space as agreed in the Placemaking Plan.
- Introducing Bath stone to the river/city facing elements of the office building with the use of a recessed grey brick to the south to further articulate the building into two separate elements. The office building has been designed to have reduced visual impact with a sloping roofs and using complementary materials for both parts of the building.
- A full storey has been removed from the central residential building, reducing its height by 3m. The number of dwellings has been reduced from 67 to a maximum of 60.
Local people and stakeholders now have 21 days to comment on the amended plans.
Cllr Patrick Anketell-Jones (Conservative, Lansdown) Cabinet Member for Economic Development commenting on behalf of the Council’s Regeneration and Project Team said “We have listened carefully to the feedback we received on the initial plans for Bath Quays South.
“This is a landmark development and it is essential it fits into the fabric of the local landscape. We are confident that the new plans address the concerns of heritage groups.
“Through the B&NES Economic strategy and our Placemaking Plan, the Council has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that residents of the city can find suitable jobs within local growing companies.
“Bath Quays South has traditionally been an important employment area for the city and our proposals will transform it from redundant industrial workplaces to new and hi-tech premises for future facing business.”
The redevelopment of Bath Quays is Bath & North East Somerset Council’s flagship project, designed to create economic growth in the city.
It forms part of the Bath’s new business district which spans the River Avon between Churchill Bridge and Windsor Bridge. Once completed, it will provide around 3,000 new high quality jobs and 130 new homes.
