Bath MP Ben Howlett recently joined members of the Bath Dementia Action Alliance and local Councillors at the Guildhall to discuss the Prime Minister’s Dementia Challenge and encourage others to get involved.

The Bath Dementia Action Alliance raises awareness to enable those living with dementia to remain in their communities as long as possible.

Ben said: “With 70% of people with dementia continuing to live at home I fully support the efforts of Bath Dementia Action Alliance to create a dementia friendly community and the government’s commitment to make England, by 2020, the best country in the world for dementia care, support, research and awareness.”

“As someone who has had two grandparents with dementia, I have seen first-hand the benefits of a dementia friendly community.

“By raising awareness and encouraging as many people as possible to become members of the Dementia Action Alliance people with dementia will be more willing to go shopping, travel on public transport and manage day to day tasks.

“This vital work will improve the quality of life for thousands of residents in Bath.”

The Bath Dementia Action Alliance was initiated by Dementia Friends Champion, Sarah Williams-Martin, who identified a need for supporting people living with dementia in the community.

Commenting on the event Sarah said: “It was such a pleasure to speak to local councillor’s about how we can all get involved to make Bath and North East Somerset more dementia friendly, the work we are doing will make a real difference to people’s lives, I would like to thank all those who came along for their enthusiasm and for supporting the project.”

Tim Warren, Leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council said: “It was great to welcome Sarah from the Bath Dementia Action Alliance to the Guildhall.

“With the growing number of people suffering with dementia I am very keen to ensure that BANES Council does create more dementia friendly communities to support those with the disease as well as their families.”

The Bath Dementia Action Alliance is asking as many local businesses as possible to become members and become dementia friendly, it’s completely free.
