A missing 56-year-old dementia suffering man from Bath, Desmond O’Sullivan, who went missing on Thursday evening, has been found after a river rescue.

Avon and Somerset Police received a call at 12.15pm today from a member of the public who reported seeing a man in a dangerous position on the bank of the River Avon, close to Pulteney Bridge.

Officers from Bath’s police station on Manvers Street went to the location and saw someone in the water in obvious difficulty.

Two officers went into the river and swam out to rescue the man, who has been identified as Desmond O’Sullivan.

He is now recovering in the Royal United Hospital in Weston.

Officers would like to thank the public and the media for all their assistance with the search for the man.

Desmond, who suffers from dementia and lives with a carer, was last seen at his home address in Lambridge Street at 8pm on Thursday.

He was reported as missing at just before midnight. The police helicopter was used on a number of occasions to try and locate him.
