Author, social activist and Guardian journalist Owen Jones visited Bath last week to attend a book signing for his new publication at Toppings book shop.
While in the city, Jones stopped off to meet members of Bath Labour Party first at the Museum of Bath at Work.
Jones, who is a regular political commentator on programmes such as Question Time and the Andrew Marr Show, said that Bath Labour’s candidate Ollie Middleton was “…exactly the kind of candidate Bath needs, rooted in his community”.
Jones attacked the despair and devastation that the Coalition has brought to families in Britain whilst implementing its divide-and-rule politics.
He said that this was a desperate attempt from ministers to justify the greatest fall in wages for over a hundred years, blaming the situation instead on marginalised groups such as immigrants.
Samuel Marlow-Stevens, chair of Bath Young Labour said: “It was an honour for us to welcome such a passionate and energetic campaigner to Bath. I am hopeful that with people like Owen championing social justice, young people can be offered a hand by politics and not just turned off by it”.
Commenting on the event, Ollie Middleton said: “It was truly great to hear such a powerful and passionate speech from Owen.
“It just goes to show that there is still energy in politics and that there are other people out there who want to see politics change so that it works for the many and not the few”.
“Next May, voters have a choice between fairness and equality, or divide and rule. They can believe the lies from ministers that Labour caused the financial crisis, or they can recognise that the real perpetrators, the bankers, have been let off the hook, with George Osborne going to Europe to fight for bigger bonuses”.
“Only a Labour government can provide the answers to the problems we face today as a society and it is wonderful that Owen came to show us his support”.
