Locals being asked to throw virtual Christmas parties to help RUH patients

The Bath Cancer Unit Support Group is asking local residents, schools and businesses to hold their own virtual Christmas parties in aid of the charity.

People are being urged to party online in their colourful Christmas jumpers to raise money for the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG) and fund vital medical equipment for cancer patients at Bath’s Royal United Hospital.

The charity recently donated £340,000 towards the purchase of a state-of-the-art digital gamma camera at the RUH.

The camera, the first of its kind to be installed anywhere in the country, will reduce scanning times for patients and create clearer images to aid diagnosis.

The charity has also agreed to fund additional equipment for the hospital’s new cancer centre and other projects, so it needs to raise even more money.

BCUSG chairman Mike Taylor said: “The Christmas party season will be very different this year because of the pandemic.

“So, we’re asking people to celebrate with friends, family and workmates online and use the festive occasion to support the cancer unit at the RUH.

“People can wear anything festive, from Christmas jumpers and slippers to Santa hats and antlers.

“All party organisers need to do is ask for a donation in return for the opportunity to dress up. You can boost donations with a Yuletide raffle or other activities and setting up an online fundraising page only takes a few seconds.”

Mike added: “As well as raising money in support of cancer patients, holding a virtual Christmas party is also a great way to keep in touch with loved-ones who may be shielding during the pandemic. Alternatively, you can ask people to make a donation to the charity instead of buying you a present.”

To create your own Christmas party fundraising page, or to make a donation, visit the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group’s Virgin Money Giving page.

The BCUSG is also looking for volunteers to join its new Bath fundraising group and for runners to take part in the 2021 Bath Half Marathon in aid of the RUH cancer unit.

The charity has secured a number of places for next year’s event, which is due to take place on 5th September.

If you would like to run the 2021 Bath Half on behalf of the BCUSG, or to discuss becoming a corporate partner, email Alan Webb at [email protected] for details and an application form.

For more information about becoming a volunteer, contact BCUSG chairman Mike Taylor on 07714 087102 or email [email protected].
