The fire service received multiple calls at just before 3.50pm reporting the blaze at St Mary’s Church and mobilised crews from Bath, Kingswood and Brislington to the scene.

They were also supported by two fire crews from Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus worked to fight the fire which is believed to have involved the roof space.

Four water jets were used to bring the fire under control.

The incident caused disruption to traffic around Julian Road.

At 5.30pm, Avon Fire and Rescue reported that the fire had been contained to a small section of the roof and was under control.

Crews continued working to remove roof tiles and damp down the area.

There have been no reports of any injuries.

An investigation into the cause of the fire took place yesterday evening, though the outcome is yet to be made public.
