A major rescue operation took place in Widcombe this morning, after reports were received of somebody having jumped into the river behind Bath Spa railway station.

A call to 999 just before 7.30am reported that a person had been seen jumping into the river in Widcombe.

Police, ambulance and fire crews rushed to the scene and Avon Fire & Rescue’s boat was launched into the water.

Crews soon realised that the person involved was not in the water and had jumped from the bank onto the pavement next to the water below.

A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset Police said that officers had quickly found the person thought to have jumped into the water and they were safe and well.
