Age UK B&NES is offering two new classes in the Chew Valley from September, with weekly walking football sessions and a gentle exercise class available for those aged over 50.

Weekly Walking Football sessions kick off on Thursday 1st September at Chew Valley School’s sports centre, and a new gentle exercise class, called Extend, starts on Wednesday 14th September at The Chew Stoke Methodist Hall.

Aimed at the over 50s, the Chew Valley Walking Football sessions start at 5pm and will cost £4 per session on a pay as you play basis.

Walking football is one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports. The skills, tactics, and all of the rules of walking football are the same as the speeded-up version of the sport, but walking football has one rule which if broken means a free kick – no running is allowed.

The sessions will be run by A 2nd Chance FC, who already run popular sessions in Bath and Midsomer Norton.

Anyone interested can turn up on the day, ensuring that they are wearing sensible clothing for exercise, and football boots if they have them, although there are some boots available to borrow, in various sizes.

Extend exercise classes offer gentle exercise to music with a qualified instructor, including chair-based exercise, and aim to improve health, mobility, strength, co-ordination and balance.

They will take place every week from 12.30pm – 1.30pm, and cost £3 per session, including refreshments.

Age UK B&NES also runs a series of events at The Hub in the Pub at Chew Stoke. The Hub is open every Wednesday and offers a friendly, social environment to get involved in the activities, have a cup of tea and meet other older people.

Sessions include:

  • 31st August – A one-off talk by Phil Densley, Age UK B&NES Trading Manager, about products and services – free
  • 7th September – Art and Craft group, 1.30-3.30pm, £3.
  • 14th September – Gadget Busters – Get help with your laptop, iPad or tablet 1.30-3.30pm, £3.
  • 21st September – Art and Craft group, 1.30-3.30pm, £3.
  • 28th September – Gadget Busters – Get help with your laptop, iPad or tablet 1.30-3.30pm £3.In addition to the regular Wednesday Hub sessions, the Lunch Bunch will meet on Thursday 15th September – venue TBC. Call Carole Reed on 01275 333723for information and to book your place.

Other activities organised by local charity Age UK B&NES include Tai Chi every Friday at the Millennium Hall 11.30-12.30, and regular walks around the area on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month.
