The historic Scala building in Oldfield Park is to be given a new lease of life as the Co-op, along with local development partner Rengen, bring forward plans for a major redevelopment of the site.

The proposed plans will retain the historic Scala building and frontage.
The development proposals include a new Co-op convenience store, refurbished space for the successful dance ‘Freedom through Dance’ studio, new residential units and affordable housing and parking.
Rengen is also proposing to provide purpose-built student accommodation in a special deal with Norland College.
The Norland College, which was founded in 1892, is a world-renowned provider of childcare training and education.
The College won a ‘Gold’ rating for the standard of its teaching for the second year running and was rated the top Independent Higher Education provider in the Student Choice Awards 2019.
Dr Janet Rose, Principal of Norland College said: “We are delighted to be in discussions with Rengen and see this as a very exciting opportunity for the College.
“With the Scala site being situated in such close proximity to Norland College, it will allow our students to have better access to the campus and its facilities during their studies.
Rengen has a portfolio of complex renovation and redevelopment projects throughout Bath, including the former Labour Exchange building on James Street West, Widcombe Social Club and the Bath Sea Cadets headquarters on St John’s Road.

“Our plans will ensure the historic core of the building is carefully renovated whilst the 1960’s rear extension will be redeveloped to create modern, fit-for-purpose living space.”
A public exhibition will be held at Hayesfield Girls School, Upper Oldfield Park, Bath on Friday 13th September between 5.30pm and 8pm and 14th September between 10am and 4pm.
Members of the public will be welcomed by members of the redevelopment team to answer any questions.
