Bath Abbey has teamed up with students from Three Ways School to offer visitors a series of fun activities using all five senses on Saturday 11th March.
Families can drop in on ‘Sensory Saturday’ from 11am-1pm or 2-4pm and have a go at making woolly sheep from cotton wool, identifying ‘mystery’ smells in colourful boxes and dressing up for the Coronation of King Edgar, the first king of all England.
They can also learn about the significance of the church font and baptism as well as find out about The Last Supper through interactive sessions run by students from Three Ways School who will be supported by Abbey staff and volunteers.
All activities for ‘Sensory Saturday’ have been designed by and will be delivered by students from Three Ways School, the community special school in Odd Down, as part of Disabled Access Day.
Activities include:
- The Coronation of King Edgar – dressing up;
- The Lord is Thy Shepherd – making cotton wool sheep;
- The Font and Baptism – writing your ‘sorrows’ onto acetate sheets and washing these off in water;
- Mystery smell boxes – identify various smells that are usually associated with church;
- The Last Supper – learning about the significance of breaking bread and wine.
Pippa Harding, class teacher at Three Ways said: “We’re delighted to have been asked to host sensory sessions for visitors to Bath Abbey. Our students love visiting the Abbey and have discovered so much about its history as well as what the church does today.
“They see it as a beautiful and inspiring place and are all really excited about sharing what they’ve learnt with other people through all five senses. This is just another example of how we’ve been able to work with local organisations to provide real work experience and training for students preparing to leave Three Ways.
“We’re grateful to the Abbey for providing this great opportunity for our students which will give them the kind of skills and confidence that every young person needs at the start of their working life – and that students with special needs deserve.”
No tickets are required, just drop in. Suitable for aged 5 and upwards. Sessions will run from 11am – 1pm & 2pm – 4pm.
