Engineers are set to begin major gas works in the Wellsway area of Bath in the New Year, as Wales & West Utilities upgrades gas pipes serving local homes and businesses.

The project is due to start on 5th January and is expected to continue until 13th March.

The work is described as vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably across the area, helping to keep properties warm “for decades to come”.

The programme has been planned with Bath & North East Somerset Council, and will involve traffic management measures throughout the scheme, including:

  • A rolling lane closure and parking suspension on Wellsway, starting near the junction with Midford Road and moving along Wellsway as work progresses towards the Hatfield Road junction
  • A road closure on Hatfield Road
  • A closure at the junction of Hatfield Road and Midford Road from 2nd to 13th March.

Simon Lee from Wales & West Utilities, who is managing the upgrade, said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community.

“Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
