Firefighters from Bath Fire Station rescued a woman and her pet dog from the River Avon in Bath yesterday morning, with everyone luckily escaping unharmed.
Three crews from Bath Fire Station trained in water rescue attended the call just before 10am.
When firefighters arrived they found the lady, aged in her 20s, in water up to her waist along with the German Shepherd dog.
It’s thought the dog had entered the water, but was unable to escape so the lady made her way into the river in an attempt to help it to dry land.
Due to the steep 3m (10ft) bank, both were unable to return to the path.
Crews put a ladder down to the water and a firefighter in a dry suit waded into the river. The lady was placed in a floating harness, before climbing the ladder to safety.
The dog was attached to a safety line and then carried up the ladder by firefighters.
The woman and dog were both cold and wet, but otherwise uninjured so did not require any medical assistance.
Avon Fire & Rescue are taking the opportunity to advise members of the public never to enter water to attempt to rescue pets or other people. In an emergency call 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service.
