A local councillor has donated £400 from her Initiative Fund to Peasedown St John Primary School, so children from families who struggle to pay for extra curricular school trips, can now afford to take part.
Cllr Karen Walker (Independent) was inspired to give the funds after local parents contacted her last year.
Karen, who grew up in the village and attended the primary school herself, said: “Sometimes children miss out because their parents can’t afford to send them on school trips. As much as schools want to help with subsidising costs, often children do go without.
“This £400 pot of money will mean that those children from less well-off backgrounds, who attend Peasedown St John Primary School, can now have the same opportunities as their classmates.”
Before Christmas, Karen met with Headteacher Damian Knollys to share the good news. She added: “The teachers and staff do a fantastic job to educate, inspire and enthuse our local children to achieve their best, and make the most of every learning experience.
“As well as this £400 grant to the school, Cllr Sarah Bevan and I will continue to lobby both the council and the government for funding for our local primary school, whenever the opportunity arises.”
The B&NES Councillor Initiative Fund is a sum of money allocated to each councillor to spend on projects in their communities.
