B&NES Council reminds local residents to ‘Be Seen, Be Safe’ during the winter months

‘Light up in the dark’ is the message to road users this winter from B&NES Council, who are reminding people to take responsibility for their own safety when out in poor weather or at night by making themselves as visible as possible.

Anthony Clarke, Bath and North East Somerset Council Cabinet member for Transport said: “We take road safety extremely seriously at Bath & North East Somerset Council and to support many of the safety measures we have in place we are asking motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to make sure they can be seen when they are out and about.

“We suggest wearing bright colours during the day and reflective clothing after dark. If you are cycling in the dark it is important to wear a brightly coloured reflective waistcoat or reflective belt and you may wish to consider a helmet-mounted light or an additional rear light or reflector on the back of your coat or bag.

“Motorists and cyclists unsure if it is dark enough for lights should switch them on.”

The UK legal requirement for cycling after dark is that the bicycle must have one front white light, one rear red light and one red rear reflector.

The Council are also reminding cyclists to ensure their brakes are efficient and in good working order.
