Local charity Age UK B&NES showcased a number of the activities it runs across Bath and North East Somerset including Extend exercise and T’ai Chi, during Older People’s Day earlier this month.
Janet Dabbs, chief executive of Age UK B&NES, said: “Older People’s Day is about celebrating age, and the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society.
“We’re delighted that SouthGate have come on board to help us celebrate this year. We will be using the opportunity to talk to local older people and their families about all the work we do right across Bath and North East Somerset including befriending for lonely older people, our Home from Hospital service, art and book clubs, gadget buster sessions and so much more.
“We are also very keen to encourage more volunteers to join us. We need people for all sorts of things, including helping out at our Hubs, day centres and lunch clubs, and befriending, which is often simply visiting a lonely older person for a cup of tea and a chat.
“Our volunteers provide a lifeline for thousands of older people living in the community.”
A SouthGate spokesperson said: “It’s a pleasure to help support Age UK B&NES via activation in the centre of SouthGate.
“We’re looking forward to seeing people get involved, and the centre team are keen to try out T’ai Chi! Pop down to the site on Monday to find out more about Older People’s Day.”
UK Older People’s Day was held on 1st October, every year to coincide with the UN International Day of Older Persons. Age UK B&NES marked the event on Monday 2nd October.
Age UK B&NES is a local charity that supports around 12,000 older people, their families and carers every year, with essential services.
It is always looking for more support, funding as well as volunteers. Get in touch with them if you can support Age UK B&NES in any way.
