Retailer Molton Brown has been refused permission to put up a sign with 3D lettering outside its shop in the city centre.

The Molton Brown store in Bath
The luxury fragrance firm asked Bath & North East Somerset Council for listed building consent and advertisement consent for the replacement non-illuminated sign at its store at 9 Union Street.
The company explained to the council: “We recently obtained approval for a new signage at this location.
“However, the proposal to change the logo letters on the façade arose after observing that some neighbouring buildings have 3D lettering in their fascia panels, and some other similar examples are also illustrated as viable options in the Bath conservation area and design guide.
“We asked for advice by email and we were informed that whilst carefully applied letters are occasionally approved, a new application for listed building consent and advert consent would be required.”
The firm stated that the proposed sign would be of a scale to suit the building and in harmony with surrounding shopfronts.
But council planners were unhappy about the proposed white aluminium 3D lettering, saying it would protrude and be “overly conspicuous”.
They ruled it would be harmful to the listed building and others nearby, and to the character and appearance of the conservation area.
