A charity which helps to feed more than 200 hungry families in the city of Bath every month is calling for support from local businesses.
Bath Foodbank, which provides emergency food parcels to families in need, is calling for financial support as it plans to relocate its warehouse.
The organisation, which is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks established by the Trussell Trust, is moving from its current location in Bathampton as the existing site is being developed into housing.
The move means the charity will have to leave behind two of its four shipping containers where the food is stored before being delivered to the distribution centres at Manvers Street Café and Rose Cottage in High Street, Twerton.
Bath Foodbank, which fed 4,000 adults and children in Bath last year, has found a new site with a raincover but needs help from local organisations to help fund the purchase of two new shipping containers – each costing just under £4,000.
Jillian Tempo, Chair of Bath Foodbank, said while the new under cover location would make working conditions better for volunteers, the cost of the shipping containers was expensive, however she said it was a more economical option than leasing a warehouse.
She said: “We have found shipping containers to be the best way to keep our running costs down as we have no buildings costs or utilities bills to cover.
“Everyone in Bath has been extremely supportive since we launched in September 2011 and we are hoping to find two local businesses who would be willing to sponsor the purchase of two new insulated containers.”
The charity is hoping to have the two shipping containers in situ ready for Harvest in September, which last year saw more than 9 tonnes of food donated by local schools and churches.
