Young people from local youth hubs are helping out in their communities as part of National Youth Work Week. The nationwide initiative, which runs from 31 October to 6 November, shows how youth work can help to bring communities together.
Members of Peasedown Youth Hub will be baking a Christmas cake, creating a mouth-watering menu and arranging the festive entertainment they plan to put on in December for older people. They are also helping Peasedown St John Parish Council with creating a garden of remembrance at the local cemetery.
Young people at Southside Youth Hub, in Bath, will be working on producing a commemorative collage of photographs and newspaper cuttings to show how the centre has continued to make a significant contribution to community life over the years.
Councillor Nathan Hartley (Lib-Dem, Peasedown), Deputy Leader of Council and Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Youth, said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council runs its youth hubs not just for the benefit of local young people but also to help them get involved in their surrounding community and have a positive impact.
“The Peasedown Youth Hub Christmas lunch is now into its third year and has proved to be very popular with the young people who feel a tremendous sense of achievement and belonging, and the older people who come along as guests and enjoy spending time together.”
Young people from Peasedown Youth Hub will also be working with Cllr Karen Walker and Cllr Kelly Souter, of Peasedown St John Parish Council, to establish a Youth Forum. This will be an opportunity for young people to find out what the parish council does in the village and discover how they can help to enhance their local community even further.
Members of Peasedown Youth Hub have raised money for local and national charities and two young people have been awarded a Rotary Club Young Citizen Award this year.
Bath & North East Somerset Council is also celebrating Youth Work Week by providing a range of positive activities district-wide in the youth hubs and via the mobile youth bus.
All programmes are open to young people aged 13 to 19 years and are free of charge or very low cost. Young people are encouraged to pop in and check out what is going on in their particular part of Bath and North East Somerset.
