Two new non-executive directors have been appointed at the Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust.
They are Nick Hood CVO, CBE and Nigel Sullivan. Both have been appointed by the Appointments Commission’s Health and Social Care Appointments Committee to serve on the Trust’s Board as follows; from August 2012 to July 2014 for Nick Hood and August 2012 until July 2016 for Nigel Sullivan. The appointments have been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ Code of Practice. Both will receive an annual remuneration of £6,096.
Nick Hood was, until recently Deputy Chairman of Brewin Dolphin plc, the UK’s largest independent private client investment managers; he is a former Chairman of Wessex Water, past Chairman of Winterthur Life plc, a life Vice-President of @Bristol and a past member of HRH Prince of Wales’ Council for the Duchy of Cornwall. He is also closely involved with a number of health and environment related charities such as Walk the Walk, Penny Brohn Cancer Centre, and is an ambassador to the World Wildlife Fund. He has considerable experience in marketing and governance and in negotiating with government regulatory bodies. Nick lives in Bath, has 6 children and 13 grandchildren who, he says, keep him too busy to be able to fish, paint or listen to good music as much as he would like to!
Nigel Sullivan is currently the Group Human Resources Director for the telecommunications group, Talk Talk plc and played a pivotal role in the restructuring of the business and the setting up of a programme to give employees a greater voice at a local and national level. He describes himself as a “failed scientist” as he was once a researcher in Environmental Chemistry with a PhD position in sight then chose a complete change of career in what was then called Personnel Management. He’s in his tenth year as a Group Human Resources Director and has also been responsible for procurement, property, health and safety and insurance over that period. He has lived in Bath for 10 years and is very fond of the city and Bath Rugby.
Nigel says: “I’m hoping I can add some breadth and depth to what is already an outstanding Board and Executive team at the RUH. These are exciting times for the Trust and I am looking forward to playing my part in the governance and development of this incredibly important service to our community.”
The Trust’s Chairman Brian Stables says: “I am delighted to welcome two such highly qualified and experienced people to the Trust Board and believe they will make a real difference in helping to influence and shape the RUH as we move towards becoming an NHS Foundation Trust.”
All non-executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for an appointee’s political activity, if any declared, to be made public.
Neither Nick Hood or Nigel Sullivan has declared any political activity in the last five years, nor declared holding any other ministerial appointments.
