Staff at Bath-based company Coinstar, whose kiosks are located in UK supermarkets, are celebrating handing over a donation of £750,000 to Cancer Research UK.
With the round pound going out of circulation by 15th October, customers looking to get rid of the old coins can use them to donate directly to Cancer Research UK at Coinstar kiosks.
The money which has donated over the last 16 years will help fund research to beat cancer sooner and to ensure more men, women and children in the UK survive.
“Coinstar is proud to support Cancer Research UK in its vision to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured,” said Nick Harris, Coinstar country manager.
“Through this collaboration, we aim to make it easy and convenient for consumers to donate to Cancer Research UK and we encourage people to donate their spare change at one of our Coinstar kiosks located at nearly 2,000 supermarkets across the UK.”
Coinstar kiosks take unsorted change, count it and then convert it into a voucher that can be exchanged for cash, allowing customers to conveniently shop within the store.
Customers also have the option to donate all of their coins to one of seven different charities, including Cancer Research UK.
“One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before,” said Rachel Turner, Cancer Research UK’s fundraising manager.
“Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. However, we have only been able to achieve this thanks to the dedication and support from partners like Coinstar; otherwise we would not be able to fund our life-saving research.
“Coinstar customers have made a huge contribution to Cancer Research UK’s work over the past 16 years and we are incredibly grateful for their support.”
