It must be Autumn as it is the much-anticipated turn of Rambert to appear at the Theatre Royal.
Once again they bring their unique, breathtaking brilliance to the stage with a trio of dances equally striking and challenging.
Wayne McGregor, Marion Motin and Hofesh Shechter choreograph this excellent triple bill in a true celebration of all that Rambert do best.
The first piece, Presentient by Wayne Mcgregor was first seen in 2002. There is a driving and relentless wall of sound that creates a rich texture of motion and rhythm.
The dance is often aggressive and violent fighting against the structures of the piece resulting in a claustrophobic and intense experience.
Rouge by Marion Motin could well become a classic. Premiered in May 2019 at The Sadlers Wells this is an extraordinary work.
Set against a power bar of lights bodies fall and reappear in the smoke-filled stage fighting against the trappings of clothing, routine and striving to survive.
Once stripped of all things artificial there is a chance that they communicate more fully away from the trappings of the world. Key to everything is simply to keep going and keep moving.
The final work In Your Rooms by Hofesh Shechter is a visceral, challenging work; first commissioned in 2007 it presents a world that is both alienating and familiar.
There is an apparent lack of control in the finely balanced work. The score created by Shechter and Nell Catchpole is performed live.
This creates a knife-edge tension and atmosphere in this revealing observation of society.
Rambert continue to excel as the international force at the forefront of contemporary dance. The packed house full of admiration for an exhilarating programme of dance; long may it all continue.
