Review | Loyisa Gola: Pop Culture – The Ring O’Bells, Widcombe

Loyisa Gola is a basketball-height black South African with a very dry wit.

The show, ostensibly about pop culture, does cover aspects of that – including complicated feelings about Michael Jackson and his album Thriller, and what that meant to a young South African boy.

But there’s plenty more about a South African view of what UK culture is like; and conversely a South African view of what UK folk may mistakenly think about South African culture.

All of this is delivered with piercing sardonic wit, and no talking down to its audience.

There’s even a joke, and a good one, about grammar! But there’s more serious stuff (serious, not solemn: very funny) about the meaning of love, for instance, and how pop culture influences it.

Real thought-provoking intellectual comedy that will tease your brain while tickling your funny bone.
