The need for a perfect family escape has never been greater and if you need to kick start your festive spirit make sure you get to the Theatre Royal Bath as soon as your mice and pumpkin will let you.
Cinderella, written by the ever-brilliant Jon Monie is a heady balance of naughty innuendo, daft fun and moments of deep emotion.
The balance in the writing is skilful and ensures the innuendo is totally missed by the youngsters but hugely entertaining to those old enough to understand.
The crafting of sentiment versus silly is what sets this Cinderella apart from previous pantomimes.
The strength of the excellent cast and great choice of music drives an energetic show and whilst it is hard to write about fully without spoilers (and I will not spoil anything); the physical comedy of the Carpenters song whilst they are sat on the wall is utter genius.
Jon Monie heads the company as Buttons, he is on fine form. The warmth and integrity of his performance is as welcome as ever, yet there are deeper moments for reflection than before which once again proves him to an absolute expert in this field.
Duncan Burt and Nic Gibney as Harmony and Melody Hard-Up are without doubt a class duo as Ugly Sisters. Apparently their first pairing, there is little chance it will be their last.
With their bewildering costumes, huge personalities and with some of the best lines, they run away with the show. It is almost impossible to boo them.
Elly Jay (Cinderella) is an engaging and loveable Cinderella. Her vocals soar and her character is allowed to be feisty and passionate with an honesty that is often lost in more traditional scripts.
Josh Rose is an excellent Prince Charming. Wit, looks and vocals are very strong which alongside Chris Fearn (Dandini) makes them a winning and popular duo.
Dani Harmer is a charming and fun Fairy Godmother and Michael Chance a suitably impulsive and great support as Baron Hard- Up. Both of these roles are allowed to create a full character again due to the fine writing.
There is not a weak link. The company work hard and the band relish the excellent mix of music.
It is hard to remember a better production at Theatre Royal and rarely has it been more needed.
Even the youngest sat glued to their seats, the adults visibly sharing their joy. The many topical references bring huge laughter and you suddenly realise just how much panto has been missed and how vital it is in the festive calendar. Oh yes, it is! Get along and you’ll find out why.
