Jenny (Shvorne Marks) and Ben (Grant Kilburn) are hosting a dinner party at their new house. Guests Lauren (Natalie Casey) and Sam (James Bye) join their long-term friends to celebrate both the home and new baby.
During Ben’s recent business trip, Jenny hears unusual sounds in the empty home, forcing her to worry endlessly that the house has a resident ghost.
She is dismissed by most as hysterical and is met with cynicism or simple help from Sam who resets their heating thermostat. But what is the cause of these concerns – for that there is an answer but I refuse to spoil anything.
Performances are good and strong. As Ben, Grant Kilburn is an irritating, academic know-it-all who immediately spars with London boy Sam. James Bye is a likeable and fun Sam who is from a different world to Ben.
Natalie Casey creates a carefree Lauren who very much lives for the moment. Shvorne Marks as Jenny is both a loving mother who also matches Ben’s intellect.
Directed by Matthew Dunster the evening flies by and the story unfolds at the good pace. Reflecting on proceedings the skill of both writer and director ensures the suspense is help throughout.
The static set by Anna Fleischle captures the “nearly finished” renovations well it is atmospherically lit by Lucy Carter.
This is a great watch and well worth a trip.
