Letter | Unrealistic rubbish collection demands

As a family of four with one baby we have found it extremely hard to adapt to the new waste collection service, where non-recyclables are collected fortnightly and everything has to be contained in one narrow black bin.

Our family recycles conscientiously and uses two food waste bins but even so we never quite manage to get all our rubbish in one black bin.

What prompted this letter is being issued with a warning notice for leaving a bin bag next to the bin, threatening me with a fine.

I know times are tight, but for families with endless nappies to dispose of, one tapered narrow bin every two weeks simply does not cut it.

This morning I watched as the bin men had to pull each bag out of the bin (where they had become wedged because of the ridiculous tapered shape) and throw them in the truck, but when it came to the one bag sitting on the ground, they couldn’t do the same.

I think a little flexibility and common sense is needed here, and I appeal to the council to loosen the rules on adding an occasional extra bag to the truck.
