Community, Care and Connection – 31/07/2026

When people think about activities in a care home, they may picture a timetable of events — a quiz, a craft session, a singer visiting or a special celebration. While these moments bring wonderful enjoyment, meaningful activity is about so much more.

It is about creating a life.

A care home is not simply a place where people receive care and support. It is someone’s home. It is where people should continue to experience joy, purpose, friendship, choice and new opportunities.

At Darcy Gardens, our approach to activities is built around a balance of structure and spontaneity.

The magic often happens in the unexpected moments a spontaneous trip out, an impromptu conversation in the garden, a favourite song playing that encourages someone to join in, or sitting together over a cup of tea sharing stories.

Meaningful activity is not restricted to a 10am–4pm timetable. It is a whole-home approach, seven days a week, reflected in the way we support residents every day.

The most successful activities are those that reflect the individuals who live here — their interests, hobbies, beliefs, memories and life experiences. There is no single formula because every resident is unique. Activities should be for everyone and, importantly, with everyone.

A garden is often thought of as somewhere for plants to grow, but at Darcy Gardens we see it as somewhere people grow too. It is a place for friendship, movement, relaxation, creativity and connection.

Our focus has been on bringing the outside in and ensuring all residents can enjoy the benefits of nature, whatever their ability. A garden is not just about gardening — not everyone wants to plant or prune! It is about sitting in the sunshine, listening to birdsong, sharing a laugh, enjoying a drink with friends or taking a peaceful moment away from the everyday.

Through the Barchester Gets Moving initiative, we have embraced the importance of movement and wellbeing. Exercise does not have to mean a gym or a strict routine. It can be a gentle walk, chair yoga, stretching, dancing, garden games or simply moving in a way that feels enjoyable.

At Darcy Gardens, activities are not about keeping people busy. They are about helping people continue to live fully  to laugh, learn, explore, connect and create memories.

Because just like a garden, people flourish when they are nurtured, valued and given the right environment to grow.
