A woman had to be rescued from her flat balcony by firefighters yesterday afternoon after a fire in a housing block in Twerton.

Avon Fire and Rescue were called to the building, Linley Court, at just after 3.30pm to reports of the fire.

When the fire crews arrived, a woman was awaiting rescue on her balcony while other residents had made it safely from their flats out of the block.

Two fire engines were sent to the scene, but on attendance the fire was deemed too severe and a further two appliances attended to battle the blaze.

Ten firefighters fought the fire, with a number of them going into the flats to search for any people who may have still been inside.

The fire took 25 minutes to be extinguished. Nobody was hurt during the incident and ambulances en-route were stood down.

Neighbouring flats suffered smoke and heat damage from the blaze.

A full investigation into the cause of the fire has now been started.
